Neil Young nasceu no dia 12 de novembro de 1945, em Toronto no Canadá. Ainda jovem, por ocasião da separação de seus pais, mudou-se para Winnipeg, naquele mesmo país. Começou sua carreira ainda na adolescência tocando folk e rock music em bandas colegiais como The Squires e The Stardusters. A mais bem sucedida foi com certeza o The Squires que chegou a fazer um relativo sucesso na região, entre 1963 e 1965.

Quando o The Squires encerrou suas atividades, no verão de 1965, Young continuou a se apresentar como artista solo no circuito local de bares de folk music, onde conheceu entre outros a cantora Joni Mitchell e Stephen Stills. Ainda nesse ano Young resolve voltar para Toronto, onde, em 1966, se juntou a The Mynah Birds, banda de Rick James (que viria a ficar famoso no final dos anos 70 com o sucesso “Superfreak”) e que contava em sua formação original com o baixista Bruce Palmer, futuro Bufallo Springfield, e o tecladista Goldy McJohn, que integraria anos depois o Steppenwolf. A banda lançou alguns compactos e chegou a gravar um álbum pela gravadora Motown, que nunca chegou a ser lançado oficialmente. Após mais este insucesso Young convenceu o baixista Bruce Palmer a ir tentar a sorte em Los Angeles.

Em L.A. Young reencontrou Stephen Stills, que estava montando uma banda com Richie Furay. Young topou a parada e trouxe junto com ele o baixista Bruce Palmer. Para completar a formação da banda, Stills chamou o amigo Dewey Martin para bateria. Juntos formaram o The Bufallo Springfield, nome de um veículo agrícola, que logo se tornou conhecida na cena local pelo seu folk-rock psicodélico. De carreira efêmera a banda gravou apenas três álbuns (Bufallo Springfield de 1967, Bufallo Springfield Again também de 1967 e Last Time Around de 1968). Nessa época Young compôs algumas de suas composições mais marcantes, como “Mr. Soul” e “Broken Arrow”, ambas do disco Again. Apesar do sucesso a banda se separou após o terceiro álbum, devido a vários desentendimentos entre Young e Sills. Era muito difícil chegar a algum consenso tendo três compositores (e egos) tão antagônicos como Young, Stills e Furay numa mesma banda. Stills foi se juntar a David Crosby dos The Byrds e Graham Nash dos The Hollies no Crosby, Stills and Nash , Furray montou o Poco e Neil Young seguiu carreira solo.

Com ajuda do sucesso do Bufallo Springfield, não foi difícil para Young conseguir um contrato com a Reprise Records, iniciando uma duradoura colaboração que durou mais de dez anos. Seu primeiro álbum solo foi lançado em janeiro de 1969, chamado simplesmente de Neil Young , e produzido por seu amigo Jack Nitzsche. No entanto é um álbum em vários aspectos decepcionante, prejudicado pela produção deficiente e pela indefinição musical.

Nessa mesma época, Young começou a tocar com uma banda chamada de The Rockets, da qual faziam parte: Danny Whytten (guitarra), Billy Talbot (baixo) e Ralph Molina (bateria), que eram amigos do produtor Jack. Neil Young sugeriu que mudassem o nome para Crazy Horse. Então quatro meses após o do lançamento de seu primeiro álbum e dois meses depois de começar a tocar com a Crazy Horse, Neil Young surpreende a todos e lança seu segundo disco solo chamado Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. Um verdadeiro marco em sua carreira. O álbum traz algumas das melhores composições de Young , como “Cinnamon Girl”, “Down by the River” e “Cowgirl in the sand”. Gravado em apenas duas semanas, no estúdio do próprio Neil, em Topanga, Califórnia o álbum selava o encontro definitivo entre Young e a banda que se tornaria o melhor veículo para sua música.

Bad Company

Bad Company foi uma banda inglesa de hard rock formada em 1973, com sucessos como “Shooting Star“, “Bad Company”, “Can’t Get Enough Your Love”, “Feel Like Makin’ Love”, “Ready For Love” e “Silver, Blue and Gold“.
Sua composição original é Paul Rodgers (Vocal), Simon Kirke (Bateria), Mick Ralphs (Guitarra) e Boz Burrell (Baixo).
Seu último álbum foi Merchants of Cool (2002), uma compilação ao vivo, com os principais sucessos e mais duas canções novas gravadas em estúdio: “Saving Grace” e “Joe Fabulous“.
Seus integrantes originais tinham tocado anteriormente em outras bandas britânicas – Free, Mott The Hoople e King Crimson.
Seu álbum de estréia, homônimo, foi lançado em 1974 pela Swan Song, e figurou entre os cem mais vendidos da década de 1970 na Billboard (5x Multi-Platinum pela RIAA). Nele se encontram alguns dos clássicos do Bad Company, como a faixa título do álbum e Can’t Get Enough. Em abril de 1975 a banda retornou com o lançamento do seu segundo álbum, Straight Shooter, que também teve excelentes vendagens (3x Multi-Platinum pela RIAA), e emplacou novos sucessos como Feel Like Makin’ Love. A este segundo álbum seguiram-se Run with the Pack (1976), ainda com boas vendagens (3x Multi-Platinum pela RIAA), Burnin’ Sky (1977) e Desolation Angels (1979), todos álbuns competentes. Depois do álbum de 1982, Rough Diamonds, o vocalista Paul Rodgers deixou a banda, e a mesma, ao que tudo indicava, estava destinada a se acabar. Rodgers passou a integrar a banda formada por Jimmy Page, ex-Led Zeppelin, denominada de The Firm.
Não obstante, em 1986, a banda retornou com novo vocalista, Brian Howe, apresentando um trabalho completamente diferente daquele que a havia caracterizado até então. O disco Fame and Fortune, em nada se assemelha com o hard rock dos anos 1970, se aproximando muito mais da sonoridade do glam metal americano dos anos 1980, mas sem o figurino espalhafatoso que caracteriza os integrantes habituais deste estilo. Os trabalhos posteriores, até meados dos anos 1990, seguiram esta tendência, sendo que no competente álbum de 1990, chamado Holy Water, a banda conseguiu emplacar uma música de relativo sucesso comercial, a balada If You Needed Somebody. Este disco foi certificado como Platinum pela RIAA. A ele se seguiu o disco Here Comes Trouble (1992), que ainda conseguiu atingir o certificado Gold pela RIAA.
Em 1995 a banda lança novo disco, Company of Strangers, com o novo vocalista, Robert Hart, no lugar de Brian Howe. Em 1997 a banda ainda lança um segundo disco com este vocalista, Stories Told & Untold, com regravações de antigos sucessos da banda e sete novas músicas. O disco é um fracasso comercial. Em 1998, Rodgers e Kirke discutem a possibilidade da banda voltar a sua formação original. Com o lançamento da compilação The Original Bad Company Anthology, de 1999, aparecem quatro novas músicas gravadas com Rodgers.

Rory Gallagher

Rory Gallagher nasceu em Balley Shannon, na Irlanda, em 2 de Março de 1949. Desde cedo divertia os amigos com uma pequena guitarra de plástico, fazendo imitações de Roy Rogers e Gene Autry. Apesar de ter sido criado em Cork, uma pequena cidade na costa leste da Irlanda, Rory estava sempre atento aos blueseiros americanos, que ele considerava os verdadeiros pais da música contemporânea. Em uma entrevista ele declarou: “Mesmo que você não goste do gênero, é preciso ouvir muito blues para se ter consciência de quanto tempo é necessário até se chegar a ser um grande guitarrista. Eles é que entendem do riscado”. E foi nessa escola de ouvido que se formou esse músico. Sua primeira guitarra foi comprada aos nove anos. Aos 15, após passar por vários grupos formados por colegas, Rory foi convidado a se juntar à “Fontana Show Band”. Não era exatamente o estilo de música que ele queria, mas já era um começo. Mais tarde, a “Fontana Show Band” foi rebatizada “The Impact”, e chegou a obter muito sucesso na Europa, tocando músicas de Chuck Berry. Rory achou tudo muito divertido, mas dizia na verdade ser influenciado por artistas que tinham garra e fogo interior, citando Leadbelly, Big Bill Broonzy, Woodie Guthrie, Johnny Winter, e John Hammond (considerado por Rory como o melhor intérprete branco de blues).

Em 1965, depois da dissolução do “Impact”, Rory Gallagher tenta mais uma vez formar um grupo que tocasse o que sempre quis: rock`n`roll em cima das raízes blues. No ano seguinte forma o “Taste”, junto com Norman Damery e Eric Kitteringhan, depois substituídos pelo baixista Charlie Macraker e o baterista John Wilson. O “Taste” se firmou como banda e, junto com Hendrix e Cream, foi um dos pioneiros do heavy-rock, da violenta amplificação de clássicos do blues rural como Sugar Mama (uma das preferidas de Rory). O grupo se firmou em Londres e fez vários shows na Irlanda e Alemanha. O Taste gravou apenas dois LPs: Taste e On The Boards. Com a dissolução do grupo, Gallagher partiu para a carreira solo. Convidou o baterista também irlandês Wilgar Campbell e o baixista Gerry McAvoy. O trio excursionou pelos Estados Unidos, e em 1971 Rory gravou seu primeiro LP solo, chamado Rory Gallagher. Ainda esse ano, Rory lança Deuce. No ano seguinte foi lançado Rory Gallagher Live in Europe, feito com as gravações das excurções do trio pela Europa. Este disco estorou nas paradas americanas e européias, consagrando o nome de Rory Gallagher como um dos grandes guitarristas de rock.

Em 72, a formação do grupo foi alterada com a inclusão do pianista Lou Martin. No ano seguinte, grava Blue Print e Tattoo. Depois veio Irish Tour `74; Against The Grain em 75; Calling Card 76 e Photo Finish em 78; Top Priority em 79; Stage Struck em 80; Jinx em 82; Defender em 88; e Fresh Evidence também em 88. Rory Gallagher morreu em Junho de 1995 em decorrência de complicações após uma cirurgia para transplante hepático. Certa vez disse: “Quando estou ouvindo música, gosto de ser arrancado da cadeira e ser jogado pelos quatro cantos da sala. Eu gosto de garra, pique, o que pode ocorrer com músicas lentas também. Não existe essa história de autenticidade em música, se ela é bem tocada e o sentimento sincero, a música é boa”.
